ALT du skal vide om kitesurfing

How do I get started with kitesurfing??

The best way to get started with kitesurfing is to take a course. At KitePeople Copenhagen you can borrow all equipment. All you have to do is show up. We provide all gear and equipment.

Is kitesurfing difficult to learn?

Everyone can learn to kitesurf. It is easier to become good at kitesurfing than, for example, windsurfing, and it has the advantage that you can always take your gear with you - also on trips, in public transport, etc.

How old do you have to be to kitesurf?

Everyone can kitesurf, whether you are young or old, and regardless of physique and shape you can get started with the world's coolest sport! But it is individual how long it takes to learn according to age and experience with other surfing disciplines or other board sports or surfing activities. As with everything else, the learning curve is shorter for the young, and the older you are, the longer it can take to learn.

Can you kitesurf all year?

Yes! But remember the right equipment for kitesurfing. You need to have neopren boots, neopren suit and gloves designed for winter when you are out in cold weather (read more about equipment below). You can't surf for as long in the winter, because your muscles get tired faster when it's cold.

Can you kitesurf when it rains?

Yes, in both rain and snow, but you should stay far away from surfing in thunder. The lines in kites can conduct electricity.

How much wind is needed to kitesurf?

6 m/second is enough for kitesurfing. With ordinary tubekites, you can - depending on weight - start from approx. 6 meters per second. The less wind, the bigger kites you should bring. If you weigh, for example, 80 kilos, you should wear a size 14. The more windy, the smaller size kite you use.

How much does it cost to start kitesurfing?

That depends on whether you want to buy new or used equipment. Used equipment with one kite costs approx. DKK 10,000 But one kite is rarely enough for kitesurfing. You must have at least two kites - a 9 and a 12 according to weight (we will help with that, so you are well dressed before you invest). When you attend courses at KitePeople Copenhagen, you get a good discount at One Open Sky. There you can also get advice and guidance on buying the equipment that exactly meets your needs.

What equipment should I use?

For kitesurfing: you will need the following:

Neoprene suit

Choose a wetsuit according to the season. If you want to kitesurf all year round, you must have a summer and winter suit. Always choose a good quality. Especially in winter. In the summer you need a suit with short legs and short sleeves (shortie). In winter, you need a suit with long sleeves, long legs and a fixed hood. It is important to avoid hypothermia. A wetsuit also has buoyancy, which will help you if you have to drift or swim ashore.

Neoprene boots

In the summer you can kitesurf in bare feet but when it gets cold, boots are necessary. They also protect the feet from stones, clams, etc. If you want to protect your feet all year round, you can choose neoprene shoes in the summer.

Gloves

If you want to kitesurf all year round, invest in a pair of good gloves.

Helmet

A helmet is mandatory when you take a kitesurfing course at KitePeople Copenhagen. They are loaned out during the course and are part of the equipment. It is always a good idea to use a helmet for kitesurfing and is recommended to buy! You need a helmet because there may be rocks under the water that are not visible when you are surfing. Buy a helmet intended for water sports - if it is not intended for that, it will absorb water and will fit incorrectly and will not give you the right protection.

Vest

A vest is a requirement when you take a kitesurfing course at KitePeople Copenhagen. They are loaned out during the course and are part of the equipment. Always wear a vest when kitesurfing.

There are several reasons for this. The vest protects you from blows and shocks if you fall. It also holds you up if you are too exhausted to swim ashore or have to float in. In terms of insurance, it is not legally required to wear a vest, but if you need to be rescued, the insurance will not cover unless you are wearing it. Always choose a vest intended for kitesurfing so that it can be worn at the same time as your trapeze.

Trapeze, kite, pump, board, kitebar: Most surf shops sell packages in which everything is included.

KitePeople Copenhagen collaborates with One Open Sky, Copenhagen's largest surf shop. That's why you can buy equipment at a really good price when you take a kitesurfing course with us.

Who can kitesurf?

Everyone can kitesurf from the age of 10.

At KitePeople Copenhagen, however, we do not teach children under the age of 12. For children aged 12-15, we recommend that parents take part in the course together with the child, so that you can have a shared experience and understanding of kitesurfing.

Kitesurfing is an extreme sport, and if you don't do it right and lack the right understanding of wind and weather and the safety of kitesurfing, it can be a dangerous sport.

Not sure if kitesurfing is for you? Or do you have an injury that makes you doubt that you can surf? Then contact us and find out more.

Can I kitesurf without attending a course?

Kitesurfing without a course is not recommended. Especially if you are a beginner and have never surfed before.

In addition to a thorough introduction to safety, which you get on our course, you learn everything you need before you go on the water.

Kitesurfing is a safe sport with the right knowledge, but if the accident happens, it goes really fast. When you participate in KitePeople Copenhagen's kitesurfing courses, you get all the knowledge you need so that you minimize the risk of injuries and accidents.

Can you kitesurf alone?

Water sports - including kitesurfing - are never a good idea to do alone. You need someone to help you launch your kite, because you have to be experienced to do it alone.

Is kitesurfing dangerous?

All water sports require being aware of wind and weather conditions. As a beginner, it is absolutely essential that you know what the weather is like before you get on the water.

Only go out in onshore winds and never alone. When you come to a new surf spot, always make sure you inform yourself about the conditions at the spot itself. If necessary, ask other surfers who know the place if there are things to watch out for. The weather can change drastically.

On KitePeople Copenhagen's kitesurfing courses, we also ensure that you have knowledge about wind and weather and what precautions to take if the weather suddenly changes.

Where can you kitesurf?

A main rule is that you never kitesurf in an offshore wind. In Denmark, we have over 7,000 km of coastline, and there are plenty of opportunities for kitesurfing.

As a beginner, it is easiest to go out to surf spots where there are shallow water areas so that you can bottom, and we also recommend that. If something happens, it is easy to put your feet down on the bottom and go ashore.

When you are a beginner, you will initially experience the possibility of losing your board when sailing, it can be a challenge to have to drag your body after your board when you cannot bottom. To body drag means to pull yourself up against the wind to get ashore. It's a maneuver you learn to do to grab your board when you've lost it. This exercise is also taught in the course. We are very privileged in Denmark to have so many shallow water areas, so there are good opportunities to learn to kitesurf.
